You will be brought back to earth quickly enough. As your descent speeds up, they too are falling from their high of saving you. Now they simply view you as disloyal. The good news for them is they now have more time to replace you. As time goes on, you recognize that you wanted to leave for more reasons than simply money, and you become unhappy again. Do you have any pride or integrity? So youâve been overcome with emotion, and youâre not very good at math. Both of these can be excused. What about your integrity? What about your pride? Letâs take a cold, hard look at what is transpiring. You have decided to leave your current employer, probably for good reasons. You have accepted a new position, agreed to it, and signed a formal offer. You have committed! You are about to squander your honor and break your word (and your signature). Regarding your current employer, you are now officially an extortionist. You can rationalize it any way you want. It also doesnât matter how nice and sweet you are. You have technically extorted more money or concessions. Itâs that simple. You need to be more worried about why you work for an organization that requires these tactics from you in order to pay you appropriately. If your current company relents and succumbs to your extortion, they are just as bad. Even worse than the extortion, you have given your word to a new innocent party. You are about to break that. Thatâs entirely your doing. Out of the other side of mouth ⦠Iâm happy to be fair. There might be rare instances when accepting the counteroffer is the smart thing to do. Perhaps you were overly emotional when you started interviewing with the new employer or there was a drastic change of events that occurred during the process. Maybe youâve had more to time think and things werenât as bad as you thought. I have seen a select few instances where individuals have accepted counteroffers and gone on to several more productive and enjoyable years with their employer. Are you feeling happy, or is something missing? If youâve been thinking of making a change, this could be the perfect time. But, finding a job can take months. If you want to make a change, itâs important to get started before the winter holidays begin to approach. Often, one of the sources of job frustration can be a lack of control. Whether youâre not doing the kind of work you enjoy, donât like your boss, or are underpaid, you may feel helpless. Itâs this helpless feeling that can really impact you each day as you go in. It can make your day seem longer, and tasks seem harder. Finding career independence starts with identifying what is within your radius of control. What can you do today that will help you to gain more freedom tomorrow? First, I recommend keeping your resume up to date at all times. Youâll be prepared, and you wonât forget important details later. On top of that, keep your LinkedIn current and connect to your colleagues. You never know when things could change. If youâre not using your favorite skills at work, look for ways to keep your expertise up to date. Consider taking on small consulting projects, or volunteer at a non-profit. You may even want to take a class or two to keep any certifications current. If youâd like to acquire a new skill, the same advice applies. Enroll in a class. There are many options at local colleges, and online. If you donât have an opportunity to try your new skill at work, look for a way to volunteer your time â" either on a non-profit project or at a part-time internship. Nurture your network. Take the time to attend networking events. Get lunch and coffee with coworkers from previous jobs. Stay connected. Reevaluate your priorities. Often, a source of unhappiness can be tied to a shifting of whatâs important to you. Early in your career, you may have been willing to work for hours on end just to make the most money possible. As youâve grown older, financial stability may be less important. You may now be looking for work-life balance, but are still saddled with a 60-hour per week job. As you can see, much of the independence we crave is tied back to a self-awareness of whatâs important to us. And, unlike Independence Day fireworks, career freedom rarely happens all at once. It doesnât go off with a bang of beautiful lights. Independence at work takes time. It takes commitment. It takes a little dedication each day.
