How to Help Hiring Managers Sell the Position

How to Help Hiring Managers Sell the Position   I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sent a well-qualified, enthusiastic candidate in for an interview only to have them come back and report that they had a horrible experience and would never want to work at that company. If this is happening to you, you need to pay more attention to training your hiring managers on how to sell the position to candidates. Does it sound like I’ve got it vice-versa? Shouldn’t the candidate be the one worried about impressing the hiring manager? In today’s employment environment, candidates have top choice for where they choose to work. This means you have to sell them on your company and on the person they will work for if they’re hired. Your hiring managers are a linchpin in this process. I coach hiring managers as well as candidates on how to prepare for a strong interview. Here is the advice I provide clients to help their hiring managers create a positive impression: 1) Teach them how to interview: Just because someone is a manager doesn’t mean they are great or experienced at interviewing. In fact, many hiring managers are just as nervous as candidates in an interview. Equip your hiring managers with solid training on interviewing techniques and the legal do’s and don’ts, i.e., what you can and cannot ask a candidate. It’s a good idea to have role-playing practice included in the training. Put a marketer’s hat on them.  Hiring managers need to be trained (ask your marketing, talent acquisition or peers to help) on what the key differentiators are for your company and how  to position those key selling points to the candidate. It is important to share what makes your company a great place to work at compared to your competitors. Provide them with training and make sure they know how the role the candidate is applying for impacts the overall success of the organization. Give them the current “big picture.” Drill it in them that the candidate’s experience is king.  Everyone expects a candidate to show up on time, right? But hiring managers also need to be on time. Not only that, they need to be taught that it is their job to provide a positive experience for the candidate. This means they need to have positive energy, be invested and present as they meet and talk with the candidate. Candidates will be evaluating the management style of the manager and be looking for a manager that is involved, positive and passionate about the work their department is doingâ€"and the opportunities the company is pursuing. Have them highlight training and development.  Millennials, especially, want to know that the company they invest their time in is fully invested in advancing their potential. But this is true of all talent. Hiring managers need to clearly outline career paths, orientation/onboarding support, and what kind of career development and coaching they are going to provide the candidate if hired. Be specific about how often performance reviews are conducted, what type of goals will be set and how they will be measured. All opportunities for professional  development need to be discussed because candidates want to know how much you value their future at your company. Caution them not to oversell, however.  As important as it is that hiring managers sell a candidate on the company, department and position, it’s equally important not to oversell. Hiring managers need to be upbeat, but realistic. They should not promise an experience that is not going to happen. I have seen candidates leave after being hired because what was promised and glorified during the hiring process never came to pass. Be sure hiring managers understand that it’s important to accurately portray the culture and to be transparent about any challenges they are working to overcome. The more you prepare hiring managers to be strong interviewers and company representatives, the better your hiring results will be. Follow these tips and equip your managers for success. Are visual CVs the future

Are visual CVs the future I was catching up on my LinkedIn groups this week and found a really interesting thread on visual CVs. Ive certainly seen some of the jazzier infographics doing the Twitter rounds, so maybe its a good time to consider how â€" and where â€" visual CVs fit within the application and recruitment process. Are visual CVs the way forward or a pleasant distraction? A digital portfolio Creating a visual CV can help you develop and consolidate your online brand. Think of it as an online portfolio; a means of collecting and updating evidence you can share with prospective employers. If youre looking to enter the creative and digital industries, its a great way to showcase your creative thinking and technical skills. Whether you decide to use presentation software like  Prezi  (maybe PowerPoint for a retro feel!) or web applications like  visualize.me  and  VisualCV  you can build an interactive and dynamic CV, ready for sharing. How to do it Choose the right software or application. Prezi is great for creative people, but you need to have good material  and  visual flair. Strong concept + good execution = great prezi! If youre not quite the multimedia genius then you might be better off with visualize.me. This is a handy web application that pulls through your information from LinkedIn and turns it into a CV infographic, with scope for you to further edit and customise once the conversion is complete. Just make sure your LinkedIn profile is complete and up to date. Approach the task just as you would for a standard CV. Think clarity, focus and readability. If your message is lost in a sea of flashy animation that promises much and delivers little, recruiters will just switch off. Do I need one? Well, there is an  escalating trend  towards visual CVs, but dont be tempted to think this is an either/or approach to job seeking. A strong visual CV should complement, not replace, your traditional CV. And even then, you need to decide whether its the right format to use. A visual CV is a great way of personalising your CV â€" and job search â€" but do remember certain industries and sectors are more conservative than others. if youre considering law or accountancy, Id probably stick to more conventional methods. A few of the pros: You can embed all sorts of files â€" video, audio, charts, graphs and PowerPoint. This is great for showing samples of your work and saying to an employer, I have the skills.heres the evidence. By integrating your visual CV with social media channels (LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook) you have access to a huge potential network. Have you heard about the  US student whose CV went viral? And the cons: Visual CVs can sometimes appear content lite. Try not to sacrifice substance for style â€" you need both! Dont assume all recruiters and HR managers will be impressed with your creativiity. They wont always have the time to spend interpreting (what can be) quite complex visual information. And heres how it can work Charles Oben, a final year student at Warwick, created a visual CV to  encourage recruiters to have a look at something that is far more interesting than my conventional CV. The response has been positive. In recent interviews with WDMP and Adconion Media Group both recruiters commented on the power of Charles online presentation. Adconion have since offered Charles a 6 month internship! Click this video to play or go to Prezi

10 Commandments Of Effective Job Hunting While Youre Currently Employed CareerMetis.com

10 Commandments Of Effective Job Hunting While You’re Currently Employed â€" CareerMetis.com Looking for a job while currently employed? That’s one smart strategy most career experts would encourage you to do.You open yourself to a lot of great opportunities outside of your existing job while ensuring you’re still getting a monthly paycheck. If you don’t get the new job, you still have your current position to fall back on. Just make sure your current employer doesn’t find out or else.evalJob hunting, while you’re still employed, is such a high-risk undertaking. One wrong move and you can burn bridges and hurt your reputation. Your boss may see it as a lack of loyalty and respect to the company. Worst case scenario: your prospect employer declines your application, and your current employer starts taking steps to terminate you.If you’re looking to leave your current job for new job opportunities somewhere else without causing complications, here are 10 crucial commandments to follow.1. Your current employer gives you paycheck; You shall not let your job hunt inte rfere with your current jobevalKeep things separate â€" that’s the golden rule. Yes, you can do your search but make sure you still give your 100% at work.Performing at or above your current performance level despite the fact you’re exiting is one way to demonstrate reverence and professionalism to your current employer. It’s not just about respecting who is giving you that paycheck every month. It’s about preserving your reputation too and being able to leave with your head held up high.2. You shall not use your work hours for a job interviewSchedule your interviews before or after work â€" not during your lunch break.Don’t let your employer question your loyalty and competence during your absence at obvious work hours. You may even consider using unused vacation days discreetly for an interview since you’d be losing these days anyway once you get a new job.3. You shall not use your company resources for your job huntNever use your work computer, telephone, and other co mpany resources to search job listings or respond to a prospective employer.evalAgain, demonstrate respect and professionalism even if you’re a few steps closer to leaving the company. And besides, all these activities can be traced, and you can’t afford to jeopardize your current position.4. Remember to inform prospective employers about your current employmentAlways tell recruiters, interviewers, or any HR Department representative you encounter that you’re currently employed.Your prospective employer would appreciate if you tell them you’re looking for a new job, you’re trying to hide your job search activities from your current employer, and you want it to be kept confidential. They will likely respect your decision and will not contact your current employer for references and whatever purpose.5. Honor your employer and coworkers by not badmouthing themevalWhen going on interviews, your potential employer will undoubtedly ask why you’re leaving your current job. This isn’t the right time to badmouth your boss, the company, the management, and the issues that could be a problem of your creation.evalAlways respond positively. Rather than focusing on the negative aspect of what you’re trying to escape from, stress on the positive benefits of moving forward.Instead of saying you’re lonely and you hate everyone in your office, tell the interviewer that you’re looking for an opportunity to work in more of a team environment.6. You shall not tell anyone at workDon’t share any information about your job search and impending departure with anyone at work â€" even to your closest colleagues, just to be safe. You know how loose lips can endanger your current and prospective job, making it difficult for you to leave on a good note.Open up to people you truly trust, such as your parents, partner, siblings, and best friend. If you need to blast an announcement, do it one-on-one or over the phone, instead of using e-mail or messaging apps, which can be easy to spread and pass on.Your goal is to let your boss and colleagues know you are job hunting Nobody knows your work ethics and capabilities better than the people in your workplace, including your boss and co-workers. But if one of these references get contacted while you’re looking for a new job (which you’re trying to keep under wraps), you’ll have a lot of explaining to do.10. You shall not lie if you get bustedIf your supervisor or manager finds out and confronts you, don’t lie. Just be honest about your intentions. Best case scenario: your frank discussion with your boss may lead to negotiations, like making your current job a better fit for you, getting an advancement or increase on your salary, or receiving other career perks that might make you want to stay.

7 Natural Ways to Combat Stress - Career Advice Blog for Millennials

7 Natural Ways to Combat Stress - Career Advice Blog for Millennials There are some people out there who are just naturally chill. They don’t stress. They can sit back and relax, handling pretty much whatever comes their way. Just kidding! Everyone stresses. It’s impossible to avoid because evolution has programmed us to stress out. And in some cases, that’s good. You want to be stressed about a lion, potential burglar or that major presentation later today. In those cases, stress can help boost your performance â€" especially if you’re facing down a lion. Brief bouts of acute stress aren’t harmful to you in the long term, but if you consistently find yourself under a lot of pressure, or are suffering from anxiety attacks, it’s time to get your stress under control. Here are seven all-natural ways to manage stress. 1.         Exercise Exercise is one of the most underappreciated stress-relief methods. It probably won’t help if you have an anxiety disorder, but if you’re dealing with everyday chronic stress, it’s worth working into your routine. Regular exercise is your best bet, but even one intense session can help get rid of stress for a few hours. And you’ll certainly sleep better that night! 2.         Try Yoga In the U.S., many people use yoga as an exercise, but it doesn’t have to be. There are so many different kinds of yoga available, you can choose whatever you think will fit your situation best. If you’re looking for stress relief, a relaxing, stretching form of yoga might be just the thing. In some cases, yoga can be a form of moving meditation, where your entire focus is on your body, breath and mindfulness. If you find yourself stressed out at work, there are plenty of yoga poses you can do in your office, as well. If anyone looks at you funny, just tell them you work better when you feel good. 3.         Meditate Meditation has some pretty amazing benefits. Taking time to sit and meditate allows you to give yourself a mental break from the rest of life. Recently, Johns Hopkins University did a meta-study on meditation. From the 47 studies they reviewed, they found significant evidence to support meditation’s role in reducing stress, anxiety and depression. The best part? You can see improvements by doing as little as 10 minutes a day, as long as you stay consistent with the routine. 4.         Grounding Therapists often recommend grounding to help combat panic attacks. Even if you have prescription medication to control your anxiety, it usually takes time to work. Grounding can help lay the foundation for a calmer mental space. If you feel a panic attack or get overly flustered, stop. Take a moment, and focus on five things you can see. Then, find four things you can feel. Move on to three things you can hear, then two things you can smell, then one thing you can taste. This is called the 5-4-3-2-1 technique, and some people find it very useful. 5.         Time Outside Spending time outside is good for you, and you don’t have to do it for long to see results. Just moving around is good for you right off the bat, but the benefits increase when you go outside. Scientists don’t fully understand why, but it seems a simple 20-minute walk in nature can reduce your perceived stress. Meanwhile, spending three days immersed in nature without access to electronics can essentially “reset” your brain. That kind of intensive restoration has lasting effects, including being able to manage stress better. 6.         Practice a Craft Practicing something you enjoy is a great way to get a mental boost. Art therapy is an entire profession dedicated to helping psychological issues, and is highly effective at managing anxiety. And it’s not something you have to be skilled at. If you aren’t very creative, just journaling is a great outlet that allows you to go back through your thoughts and emotions. The primary purpose is usually to try and understand yourself better, which can help you handle stressful situations better in the future. 7.         Take a Bath Baths are one of the staples of a child’s bedtime routine because they’re relaxing. Sure, some kids will go nuts in the tub, but that effect tends to wear off as you get older. Instead, try a bath as an adult and make it as relaxing as you possibly can. Incorporating aromatherapy scents like lavender can help make your bath work double time for you, and a glass of wine wouldn’t hurt! There are as many different ways to deal with stress as there are people. Everyone has to find unique ways to handle it. These are just a few ideas others have found helpful, and you might benefit from them, too. What are your favorite stress-busting techniques? Let us know about them and sign up for more tips!
