Three clever ploys for dealing with dumb job interview questions
Three clever ploys for dealing with dumb job bewerbungsgesprch questionsThree clever ploys for dealing with dumb job interview questionsWeve written about The 12 Habits of Genuine People at Ladders News, but what happens when your interviewer isnt genuine? An article that promises We got 10 CEOs to tell us their one killer interview question for new hires ought to be full of impressive questions that directly connect the behavior and past performance of the candidate to the job, right?Unfortunately, no.As it happens, the ten CEOs that Quartz assembled anzeigegert the usual mess of dumb questions, self-important nonsense, and bizarre voodoo rituals. And while theres a good explanation for how even the top dog at a company can end up asking the worst interview questions, the important outcome for you is to make sure that dumb questions dont keep you from landing a great gig. These bad questions shouldnt cause you concern, and in fact, theyre an opportunity for you to shine by gently movin g your answers to the core of what really matters - your likely success in the job.Interviews are strange, of course. Its tough for you to get a feel for whether youre supposed to be buddies with the person across the table, or try to impress them, or puff yourself up. Thats why its common to have a bit of sympathy for anybody whos going on a job interview - almost everybody says good luckBut we should also have a dash of compassion for the person doing the interviewing. As behauptung CEO questions confirm, most interviewers in the United States are horribly trained - if trained at all - and are often just thrown into interviewing without preparation, education, or practice.Thats how you wind up on the receiving end of questions like these - and lets face it - these are terrible questions Talk to me about when you were seven or eight. Who did you want to be? A key test comes early in the meal I give them the wine list. I told him to sing for us Would you rather be respected or feared? The reason theyre terrible is they have elendhing to do with job performance. And I dont just mean directly. There are plenty of questions that are not directly about how you did your job that are nonetheless effective in assessing future job performance (Ken Moelis Monopoly question being a good example of assessing analytic skills via non-job-related subject matter.)What I mean is that these questions are not predictive of future job performance. There is nothing about what you wanted at eight years old, how well you know your way around a wine list, or your propensity to sing in public that has any ability to determine whether or not youll be good at the role youre interviewing for.So lets get to the practical matter how should you handle dumb questions from the CEO, or anybody else, in an interview? Here are your three clever ploys for dealing with interview oddities. Your can use some variation of these responses, always delivered in a pleasant, accommodating, welcoming w ay, to move the conversation to the substance of your ability to do the job.The But What About Me? MoveWhat are you trying to understand better about my background with this question? Perhaps I can help clarify something I havent made clear. The Let Me Highlight What I *Am* Good At GambitI think what youre trying to ask is whether Im good at ___________ fill in the blank with something youre good at. Let me share with you the time thatThe Jiu Jitsu, Turn-It-Right-Around-And-Send-It-Back ActionI know this job is important for your team / group / company. What would be the answer youre looking for from somebody in this role, and I can tell you if I match up with that? Each of these moves, alone or combination, can help you keep your interview flowing in the right direction. So rather than frittering away valuable interview time on answering daft questions, or getting annoyed with an amateur interviewer, turn the conversation towards something that puts your abilities in a better light.F or exampleWould you rather be respected or feared?Help me understand what are you trying to assess about my experience with that question. Whether Im effective at motivating people, right? Well, let me tell you about the time thatSing for us.I think what youre trying to ask is whether Im comfortable in front of audiences, and the answer is definitely not Thats why Im applying for this economics analyst job. Numbers sing to me, I dont sing for themWhat did you want to be when you were seven or eight?Great question, and I know this job is important for your team. What kind of answer are you looking for from the candidate youll hire for this role? And then I can tell you whether I match up with that.In every case, turn the conversation back to the job, your experience, and how your background indicates that youll be successful in this role.

Heres How to Gain Clarity When Youre Stuck in Your Career
Heres How to Gain Clarity When Youre Stuck in Your Career Heres How to Gain Clarity When Youre Stuck in Your Career Several years ago, my team planned a two-day event called the âInstigator Experience.â In the nine months leading up to the event, my life changed a lot. I found a mentor who played an instrumental role in helping me turn my business around, self-published a book that succeeded beyond my wildest expectations, and rebranded my podcast. After the event was over, my life took a turn for the worse. The major difference between before and after the event was clarity. Before the event, I knew exactly what I should be working on every single day. After the event, I didnât have the same clarity, and as a result, I lost a great deal of momentum. When youâre not clear on your goals, itâs impossible to accomplish them. Youâd never get in your car with no idea where youâre going. But we do this all the time in life. 1. Finding Clarity Half the battle of finding clarity is figuring out what you want. Sometimes we think we want certain things because other people think we should want them. When we choose to do something because of the validation weâll receive, we often make errors in judgment. For a while, I had this idea that I wanted to turn Unmistakable Creative into a large, venture-funded media company with hundreds of employees. But the more I understood what that truly meant- a board to answer to, employees to manage, an office where I was expected to show up every day- the less I wanted it. By doing that Iâd end up creating the very thing Iâd spent the last 10 years trying to escape. Figuring out what you truly want is a process of deep emotional inquiry, and you need to be willing to be honest with yourself. One of the reasons I write 1,000 words a day is that it helps me find clarity. By getting thoughts and ideas out of your head and onto a blank page, youâre able to see your thinking. Another simple exercise that I revisit every few months is something my friend AJ Leon recommends in his book, The Life and Times of a Remarkable Misfit: Write a 500-word description of what you want your life to look like in two years. This will act as your signpost. Then (and hereâs the kicker), post it on your blog or email it to someone who will âget it.â Itâs hard to go back on a revolution that youâve already announced. Meditation can be another great way to find clarity. When I interviewed Gay Hendricks about finding your zone of genius, he recommended a daily meditation and contemplation of the following: 2. Aligning Actions to Goals Once you have clarity, it becomes straightforward to align your actions with your goals. Last year I had one big goal: finish writing my second book. The action that aligned with that goal was to set aside one focused hour a day of uninterrupted creation time. I even have the period blocked off on my calendar. I had a deadline of November. Because of this, I was able to break up a huge goal into smaller, more manageable parts. Writing a 50,000-word book feels intimidating. Writing 500 words a day over nine months doesnât. Accountability can also make a big difference in your ability to take action. I work with a fantastic writing coach who keeps me on track. If it had been a few days since Iâd made a dent in my manuscript, sheâd send me an email nudging me, or weâd set up a phone call to talk about where I was stuck. In his book, Principles: Life and Work, Ray Dalio uses the analogy of a machine to describe a process for achieving goals. We have goals, and we have an outcome. The actions you take bridge the gap between your goal and your outcome. If the goals are different than the outcome, you have a flaw in the design of the machine. If the outcome isnât favorable, you have to either change the design or change the people. Itâs also important to focus on high-impact tasks. Throughout his career, Brian Tracy always asked himself the question, âIs what Iâm doing leading to a sale?â If the answer was no, he knew that he wasnât focused on a high impact activity. So, ask yourself: âIs what Iâm doing moving the needle on what matters the most?â High-impact activities tend to be in your zone of genius- the kinds of things that nobody can do as well as you do. They also tend to be focused on behavior instead of outcomes. I canât outsource writing or interviewing guests for my podcast- those are high-impact activities. But editing the show, formatting blog posts, and other ancillary activities are necessary, but not the highest impact things I could be doing for our business. For some people, low-impact activities become a form of procrastination. As a result, theyâre busy, but not productive. Below Iâve included a simple framework you can apply: A bias toward action is what separates the people who benefit from clarity from those who donât. Consistency leads to progress, which increases your motivation, which in turn creates momentum. In any life, youâll go through periods where you have a tremendous amount of clarity, and moments when you lack it. When a career has been a big part of your identity for a long time and no longer is, youâll be searching for clarity. Throughout our lives, we walk into these caves of darkness and emerge into the light, having evolved, grown, and transformed into better versions of ourselves. 8 Job Search Sites You Probably Havent Tried Yet
8 Job Search Sites You Probably Haven't Tried Yet 8 Job Search Sites You Probably Haven't Tried Yet 8 Job Search Sites You Probably Haven't Tried Yet When you're looking for a job, which web site do you turn to first? We're guessing it's either CareerBuilder or Monster - probably even both. That makes sense. Theyre the biggest and most promoted names in online job boards, after all. But while they may be the most widely used by job seekers, not all employers use these big names to search for new hires. In fact, there are a handful of other job boards and job search engines that deliver results. Take a look: Indeed: This job search engine consolidates all the job listings from major job boards (including Monster and CareerBuilder), newspapers, associations and company career pages. Just enter a keyword and city, state, or zip code to search available openings. You can also access jobs on Indeed right from your account. The job search tool displays job opportunities that match your profile, but you can also modify and refine your search by job title, geographic area, and more. Simply Hired: Similar to Indeed, this site crawls job boards and company sites to find local jobs, identify trends, and research salaries. Mashable Jobs: Mashable, an online hub for news in the technology field, also posts jobs from the technology sector. Job Search USA: Offers job listings from various organizations, including not-for-profits, small businesses, corporations, and educational institutions. SnagAJob.com: Features job listings for part-time and hourly positions. mediabistro.com: This is mostly an online meeting place for creative professionals, but it also features job postings that are ideal for anyone who creates or works with content, or non-creative professionals who work in a content-related industry. You have to register (for free) to view detailed job listings. (Talent Zoo is another niche site that serves the advertising, marketing, and media industries. You can search for jobs or upload your resume and let employers search for you.) Dice.com: This technology-focused site features opportunities for qualified technical and engineering professionals. NursingJobs.org: This nursing-specific job site lets you search for nursing jobs by specialty and location, or for travel nursing. If you've been using Monster or CareerBuilder but aren't satisfied with the results, you should expand your resources and search as many job boards as you can. Remember, not every employer uses the big-name boards to find their next new employee.

Why rejection hurts (and 3 ways to dust yourself off)
Why rejection hurts (and 3 ways to dust yourself off) Why rejection hurts (and 3 ways to dust yourself off) Nobody is immune to rejection. Even the most beautiful and talented people have been rejected in one way or another. When you take risks in life, you face the possibility that you might be shut down or might not make the cut.Different phases of life bring different opportunities and situations where weâve got to put ourselves out there and be vulnerable. Dating, high school sports tryouts, college applications, and job interviews are a few prime examples. Thereâs a reason you probably shudder at the thought of these experiences - they all come with a reasonable chance of rejection, and the odds are pretty good that youâve experienced rejection already in one of these contexts. As much as weâd like for everything to always go our way, thatâs not the way the universe works. While rejection is pretty much inevitable in some capacity, it still hurts. Itâs painful to get shut down for something you want, whether itâs a date with a crush or a job at your dream company. We al l want to be loved, cherished, and accepted - be it by a romantic partner, friend group, or boss.Rejection can cause us to feel a slew of emotions, ranging from confusion to sadness to rage. Oftentimes, people donât understand exactly why theyâve been rejected, which can lead to a downward spiral of negative introspection and an overall sense of not feeling âgood enough.âSocial and romantic rejection can be especially traumatic and negative for our self esteem. âHumans are inherently social creatures. We crave connection and meaning to others. When faced with rejection, or lack of acceptance, itâs hard of us to not internalize negative thoughts about our own self-worth. Rejection brings up the existential crisis of âalone-ness,â which is quite painful and hard to ignore,â Jor-El Caraballo, LMHC and Talkspace therapist, explains. The science of rejectionOn top of being hard to ignore, instances of rejection can also be pretty hard to forget.Personally, I remember moments of rejection even as far back as elementary school. I had a huge crush on a boy in my class, and during lunch time I asked him who he thought was prettier, me or this other girl in class. He chose - you guessed it - the other girl. It hurt! I remember that day, and how it felt to hear those words, vividly. Iâve wondered, why is this memory and the feelings around it still so clear to me?âMemories are complex processes that occur in the brain. Highly emotional experiences, like rejection, get stored in the brain and remain there thanks to the amygdala [a part of the brain] that attaches meaning to experience,â Caraballo says. âIf youâre someone who has struggled with rejection, and that gets reinforced in various scenarios so that it gains meaning and importance - even in small ways - that rejection turns into our pervading emotional story.âBesides the fact that being rejected straight up sucks, thereâs actually scientific data and evolutionary research tha t helps us better understand the pain of rejection, and why the pain is so distinct.Studies using MRI brain scans have shown that the same region of the brain that is activated while experiencing physical pain is also activated while experiencing emotional pain, like rejection. However, thereâs an interesting difference to be noted when it comes to re-living emotional pain.Another study showed that re-living emotional pain is more unpleasant, and results in more brain activity, than re-living physical pain. The study also confirmed that itâs easier for us to recount details and feelings from occurrences of emotional pain than physical pain. This explains why it hurts more to reflect on the time you got dumped than to the time you broke your arm.Continuing with the âbroken armâ example, we get patched up and are typically as good as new in a few months. Emotional pain, however, can linger for decades if we donât learn ways to heal its lasting wounds. How to recover from re jectionSo, how do you pick yourself back up after facing rejection? There are a few things you can do to make yourself feel better about the situation ⦠and prepare yourself better for the next time you may face rejection.Allow yourself to feelRather than suppressing all the emotions that come with rejection, allow yourself to feel and process them. Holding in your negative emotions and bottling up all the feelings is no good for you.âI think that like many other experiences we often tell people that their feelings donât matter and they should âjust get over it.â We could really stand to focus more on creating space for people to feel their feelings, even rejection, and find ways to feel it and cope rather than just ignoring the pain and making it all better,â Caraballo says.Spend time with people who accept youSurround yourself with people who love you and accept you. While it may be tempting to isolate yourself further when youâre feeling upset over rejection, itâs important to be at least a little social with loved ones.Remember that you are loved and appreciated, and donât let an act of rejection make you believe otherwise. You canât always be accepted for every opportunity or by every person - and thatâs okay! The people around you will remind you that youâre loved and valued.Practice self love and self careItâs so important to love and have a positive relationship with yourself. Doing so will help you be more resilient with future instances of rejection.Make a list of the positive traits you have that youâre proud of, inside and out. Appreciate the parts of yourself that you love, and work on cultivating good self esteem. You can also make a list of your accomplishments, both big and small.Be sure to carve some time out for self care. You can journal or create art to express your emotions, take a hot bath to zone out, or head to a fitness class like kickboxing to burn off some anger.Rejection is a Natural Part of Our Liv es, Embrace it!So, next time youâre facing rejection (which hopefully wonât be soon) remember that your feelings are totally valid, and itâs okay to feel sad when youâre going through it.Itâs a part of this crazy ride we call life, and if you want to live it to the fullest, youâve gotta pick yourself back up when you get knocked down. This article first appeared on TalkSpace.

5 Ways Co-workers Waste Your Time in the Office - The Muse
5 Ways Co-workers Waste Your Time in the Office - The Muse 5 Ways Co-workers Waste Your Time in the Office âSo, anyway, thatâs what happened. I can promise you one thing, Iâm never asking Brian to help me move again,â concluded my co-worker, clearly out of breath from the seemingly endless story she had just recounted to me. How did I get stuck listening to this? All I did was ask her how her weekend went. Little did I know, I was in for an epic monologue about how her boyfriend, Brian- despite having a pickup truck- was, âLike, totally useless on her moving day, even though she had been telling him about it for weeks. Like, didnât he understand how important this was to her?â All I could do was stand there in horror, just waiting for her to either finish emotionally processing her horrifying weekend memory or to run out of air- whichever came first. Sound familiar? Letâs face it- co-workers can be awesome. But, they can also be major time sucks. From divulging all of the gory details of a far-too-personal story (by the way, thanks for nothinâ, Brian) to trapping you in one of those dreaded never-ending email chains, weâve all fantasized about how much weâd get accomplished if we were able to work completely alone. So, in no specific order, here are the biggest offenders- plus how to stop them in their tracks. 1. Dropping by Your Desk Repeatedly Rest assured, this far too lengthy moving conversation wasnât the first time Iâd heard of trouble brewing in paradise for my co-worker and that good for nothinâ Brian. Why? Well, because she frequently stopped by my desk unannounced to vent about it. If she wasnât having boyfriend troubles? Sheâd drop by to talk about the weather, or her upcoming birthday, or the staff meeting that morning, or even to just ask a seemingly innocent, âWhat are you doing?â My response was always that I was working (uh, duh), much like she shouldâve been. But, even my sarcasm couldnât deter her. Sheâd stay parked there- leaning against the very cubicle wall that was designed to keep distractions out- rambling on and on. How to Put an End to It As Muse editor Stacey Lastoe suggests in an article about shutting down conversations, you have two options: Be super obvious (or oblivious depending on how you look at it), and pop your headphones in when the offender approaches, or straight-up say that youâre slammed with work and unfortunately canât talk right now. 2. Sending You Endless Emails Your inbox often makes you feel like youâre stuck in the Twilight Zone- you canât look away for more than two seconds without a new message arriving. Sure, a few of them are important. But, the rest of them? Theyâre totally unnecessary notes from your colleagues discussing the project youâre all working on. Your team members continue to send short, one-line responses back and forth, even though itâd be so much easier and more efficient (not to mention less distracting!) for them to talk things through via instant message or- gasp!- in person. But, nope. Youâre stuck dealing with this- all for a conversation that has somehow segued into a heated debate about who makes the better guacamole. How to Put an End to It Itâs time to train your co-workers to send you less email. No, this doesnât involve bribing them with treats (although, that certainly wouldnât hurt). If youâre stuck in that never-ending chain, gently suggest that they take that conversation elsewhere. And, moving forward, respond with definitive statements- rather than more questions- so that you can keep the conversations as concise as possible. 3. Inviting You to Unnecessary Meetings When your colleague sent you a calendar invite for an upcoming meeting, you simply assumed it was relevant and important. So when that set time rolls around, you head into the conference room and take a seat. The conversation gets rolling, and suddenly feel like you did when you somehow stumbled into the wrong classroom on the first day of school. You have no idea what is being discussed. Wait, who even are these people? It quickly dawns on you that this is a meeting you definitely donât need to be at. But, for some reason, your colleague was passing out invites like Valentineâs Day cards in elementary school- everybody gets one! Lucky you. How to Put an End to It Like it or not, your co-workers will likely continue to invite you to things you donât really need to be at unless you speak up. Hey, at least youâre apparently enjoyable to be around? So, knowing that, itâs up to you to be proactive in determining whether or not you really need to be there. Do so by asking yourself and your colleagues a few key questions, such as, âIs there an agenda?â and âAm I prepared to contribute to this discussion in a meaningful way?â (You can find more questions in this handy flow chart.) 4. Asking You Questions (Thatâve Already Been Answered) Do we have this holiday off? Is this week payday, or is it next week? How many sick days do we get? Am I allowed to use the color printer for personal use? Weâve all had those co-workers who seem to treat us like weâre quite literally the employee handbook. While youâre flattered to be thought of as the all-knowing expert on anything and everything company-related, the fact that you need to repeatedly answer questions that have already been addressed elsewhere can quickly become frustrating- not to mention, it eats up major chunks of your time. How to Put an End to It Throw the employee handbook at him. Just kidding, donât do that- unless lawsuits are your thing (which I certainly hope theyâre not). Instead, the next time your colleague approaches you with a question thatâs already been answered, kindly refer him to where he can find that for himself. Hopefully before too long, heâll get the hint. 5. Failing to Adequately Prepare You and your colleague have a meeting planned so that you can talk over the project youâre working on together. When you sit down and whip out your well-prepared notes, you soon realize that sheâs done absolutely nothing to get ready for this conversation- except, apparently, go through the Starbucks drive-through. Youâre left doing most of the talking (ahem, work), while she gives you blank stares, nods along, and sucks down her iced chai latte. How to Put an End to It Think thereâs no polite way to tell someone that sheâs a colossal waste of your time? Think again. As Muse writer, Rich Moy, explains in his piece on what to say when a co-worker is wasting your time, you just need to flip the script and use âyouâ language- rather than pointing fingers. Take a cue from his story and try saying something like, âIâm excited that weâre working on this together. But, maybe we should regroup after we both have had some time to adequately prepare.â Did I miss any major ways that co-workers waste your time? Go ahead and vent to me on Twitter!

How Careers Have Changed (and How to Manage Yours Accordingly)
How Careers Have Changed (and How to Manage Yours Accordingly) How Careers Have Changed (and How to Manage Yours Accordingly) At the end of the long job search tunnel, you might want to sign the first job offer you get. Or, maybe not. Maybe after all that hard work, you want to really make sure you know what it means when you sign on the dotted line. Are you signing your life away? Committing yourself to one company for the next 10 years? No, not really. Today, one in four workers has been with their current employer for less than a year, and one in two for less than five years. And itâs not just in the U.S. In Germany, a full two-thirds of younger workers do not have permanent jobs. Instead, they have âfixed-term contracts,â and companies let them go whenever their contract ends. No longer are people cultivating a long-term relationship with their employer. This shift has created a new transactional model of interacting with companies. But before we dig into that, letâs back up. Jobs and careers have gone through a couple big shifts if you go back far enough. In the 19th century, most people in the U.S. worked in agriculture and rather than jobs, people performed chores. The focus wasnât on skills or qualifications, but character. (Ha! Wouldnât that be nice?) Praise was bestowed on the honest, hard working, and altruistic. Later, in the industrial era, urbanization and rapid technological change created factory and assembly line work. People flocked to cities to get âjobs.â Personality tests were created to help workers find their permanent job âmatch.â Then, the post-WWII economic boom created the middle class, suburbs, and bureaucracy. Corporations were born, and the industrial assembly line inclined upward into the corporate ladder. The word âcareerâ entered the common lexicon. Now weâve moved on again. Corporations downsized, flattened, and restructured. Willingly or not, the era of the corporate job is ending. Career used to mean a life-long relationship with a company. You give 30 years, the company takes care of you and gives you a pension. The shift means companies are no longer made up of workers, but work to be doled out. And itâs not just companies; workers seem less interested in staying put, too. Employees today are temporary, contract, freelance, part-time, external, or adjunct. The shift from corporate career ladders to project-based careers has been met with mixed reactions. While many mourn the loss of pensions and the safety net that represented, others celebrate the ownership theyâve been able to create in their careers. And yes, the loss of a predictable career makes it hard to form plans for the future, but it also allows for opportunities to pivot and change direction. Rather than a rigid corporate ladder, we now have a career path, and that path is made by moving (probably, a lot). Today, people are not trying to follow the script, but figuring out their story. With this new need for people to take more responsibility and become more flexible in preparing for and adapting to career changes, career management has become even more important. Now, career success depends not on one big decision in your 20s, but on relentlessly learning and trying new things. It used to be that your job or career was fixed, virtually for life. But now your career will probably be full of ambiguity and tension because it will inevitably be uncertain, experimental, disjointed, and ever-changing. So, what now? Whether youâre just starting out or youâve been working for the same company for over 20 years, youâre going to need to start thinking about your next move. The biggest career management mistake you can make in the world of work today would be to sit still. Be prepared- learn a new technology, take on side projects, grow your network. And, as Stanford Business School reports, be prepared to ârepotâ your career every 10 years or so to keep your work engaging, innovative, and meaningful. Because we can certainly expect things to change again. Want to learn more? Women who interrupt conversation seen as less intelligent
Women who interrupt conversation seen as less intelligent Women who interrupt conversation seen as less intelligent When you interject your awesome point in a meeting, will your colleagues consider you assertive or rude? The answer may, unfortunately, depend on your gender, according to new research from Stanfordâs Katherine Hilton, a doctoral candidate in linguistics.Hilton found that we all have different definitions of whatâs an interruption, but overall, men are more likely to view women who interrupt a conversation as rude and less intelligent, than men who do the same.Research: women who interrupt are viewed by men as dumberTo test our varying definitions of interruptions, Hilton had 5,000 U.S. English speakers listen to scripted audio clips and judge the speakerâs intent. In one clip, the interrupter took the conversation off the rails and changed the subject while loudly raising their voice. Although the scripts were kept identical for every version of the clip, men had different reactions when the loud interruption came from a woman. When women loudly interrupted, men thought she sou nded ruder, less friendly and less intelligent than if the interrupter was a man. Women judging the conversations showed no significant bias towards either male or female interrupters.âFinding this gender bias wasnât as surprising as the extent of it and the fact that it altered perceptions of a female speakerâs intelligence, which we donât think of as related to interruptions,â Hilton said.Your conversation style makes a difference tooOutside of scripted conversations, why do some of us feel the impulse to interrupt? In the office, it could be a way to signal your power. âInterruptions can be used to display or gain dominance,â Adrienne Hancock, a linguist who has studied how women get interrupted more by men, told the New York Times. One study found that an officeâs interruption rate correlated to the personâs seniority. The more senior you were, the more you interrupted. The difference between a friendly assertion and a rude interruption may also come down to pe rsonal preferences. As you listen to a group discussion, there will be talkers who cannot let a minute pass without interjecting a comment and quiet listeners who need to think their words over before speaking. The listeners are the ones who would prefer it if we all spoke one at a time, thanks. Hilton calls the talkers âhigh-intensity speakersâ and the listeners âlow-intensity speakers.âWhen the high-intensity group watched a clip of simultaneous speakers expressing agreement with one another, they did not consider the overlapping talk an interruption. In fact, they found these speakers to be engaged and friendlier than the speakers in other clips who paused more. Meanwhile, the low-intensity group had the opposite reaction and found any simultaneous talk to be a rude interruption.âListenersâ own conversational styles influence whether they interpret simultaneous, overlapping talk as interruptive or cooperative. We all have different opinions about how a good conversati on is supposed to go.â Hilton said.
